Workshop Manuals Part Number 512947 and Part Number 511243 - GT-6 and Spitfire, Respectively

April, 1970

The procedure described in the GT-6+ and Spitfire Workshop Manuals under Group 3 (rear axle section) page 3-116 and headed "Installing Pinion and Bearings" second paragraph as follows: "Install the pinion into the housing and omitting the spacer (61), shims (60), and oil seal (58), assemble the tail bearing (59), driving flange (57), plain washer and nut (56), tighten the nut to the required torque given on page 0.113." The torque figures given are 70 to 85 pounds feet for the Spitfire and 12 to 16 pounds feet for the GT-6+. It should be stressed that at this point the nut is not tightened to any particular torque figure, therefore, both manuals should read, "Utilizing special Tool No. S98A, tighten the pinion nut (56) sufficiently so that a torque of 12 to 16 pounds inches applied to the flange (57), will just rotate the pinion assembly. Refer to illustration below.

Using Tool No. S98A to measure pinion bearing preload.
