Valve Springs- Stag

July, 1971

A few isolated cases of valve spring failure have occured on the Triumph Stag. This problem has been arrested at production level and dealers are requested to replace all the valve springs on Stag vehicles in stock.

There are two methods of replacing the valve springs:

Method 1. Removal of both cylinder heads from the engine as per workshop manual, section 12-29-10.

Method 2. Leaving the cylinder heads in position Refer to workshop manual, section 12-13-01 and operate as follows:

A. Remove the tappets and pallets.

B. Remove spark plugs

c. Use a suitable adaptor, fitted in place of the spark plug so as to apply air pressure to one cylinder at a time. This will keep the valves in position. Using special tool number Z104, remove the valve cotters, collars, and springs.

D. Replace the valve springs, refit collars and cotters. Note: Springs must be fitted with the closer coils towrds the cylinder head.

E. The air pressure can now be released. Proceed to the next cylinder and repeat as described above.

Claim under code number A412. Time allowance 07.90 hrs.

Replacement springs are available from your distributor upon request and can be identified by a yellow or green paint marking.

Valve spring part number 151763.
